More money sought for hiring of tanods
By Gingging A. Campaña

CEBU City Mayor Tomas Osmeña wants to get more funds for the hiring of additional tanods in the barangays.

He is asking the City Council to appropriate the money.

The mayor said he is willing to release more funds for the maintenance of peace and order as long as these are not wasted.

Osmeña has received requests concerning tanods from various barangays such as Mabolo, whose chairman asked for five more tanods in his community.

“We will do this in stages,” he said.

Assistance

Also, the mayor said the City is willing to assist village chiefs who wish to replace tanods known to be colluding with policemen in protecting operators of video carrera machines.

He confirmed that the appointing power lies with the barangay chief and not with the barangay councilors.

Osmeña was alluding to the request of the Police Coordinating and Advisory Council for the Association of Barangay Councils to investigate the alleged involvement of T. Padilla barangay tanods in the operation of video carrera machines.

T. Padilla Barangay Captain Michael Ralota has recommended the dismissal of tanod Ruben Intong after video carrera caretaker Marina Nuez accused him, in a sworn statement, of conniving with the operator.

It was learned that most of the tanods in Barangay T. Padilla were hired through the recommendation of barangay councilors.

“We’ll ask him (Ralota) to change his tanods. I’m not afraid to change them,” Osmeña told reporters.
