Paraiso tows Grachiya By Rommel C. Manlosa
GRACHIYA Energy Drinks went to Ronald Paraiso to draw first blood following an 86-83 victory Wednesday night in Game 1 of the best-of-three series for the CBF Lapu-Lapu City Mayor’s Cup title at the Lapu-Lapu City Sports Auditorium.
General Feeds Megamix, on the other hand, beat All Care Insurance in a controversial 106-94 win for third place.
Hapee started hot early but Grachiya was not far behind as it engaged the top elimination-round finisher in a rousing exchange of fire. After allowing Hapee to post a 25-21 lead in the opening quarter, Grachiya turned to Paraiso who wreaked havoc from all angles to give the Commissioner’s Cup champion a 42-36 lead.
Hapee then regrouped and used Reed Friar Juntilla to counter the fire, but Paraiso held his ground to keep Grachiya afloat despite the huge efforts of Hapee to change the complexion of the game.
Leodi Garcia, Allan Salansang, Marvin Mercado and Patrick Benedicto tried to lift Hapee, but the Energy Boosters got total control of the game with Bernie Ursal making significant contributions down low along with John Velasco, Pablo Tecson, Ranulfo Abo and Joselito Celiz, who combined for 30 points to give Grachiya a huge psychological advantage going into Game 2 on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Gilbert Neo continued to shine for the Edsel Vallena-mentored Feeds Masters as he dropped 23 points to outshine the 33-point performance of Roy Lura of All Care. However, league commissioner Bobby Inoferio had to call the attention of the team managers of both teams after they apparently lost interest in the game in the final seven minutes.
Inoferio noted that All Care deliberately gave up the game by making hurried shots, while failing to put up a defense. General Feeds allegedly also made hasty attempts.
After a verbal warning, the game was resumed but Inoferio strongly recommended that the third-place trophy will not be awarded.
Grachiya (86) – Paraiso 32, Ursal 12, Velasco 9, Tecson 7, Abo 7, Celiz 7, Redullosa 6, Choy 4, Estrera 2. Hapee (83) – Juntilla 23, Salansang 16, Garcia 16, Mercado 11, Benedicto 10, Giron 4, Tundag 2, Moreño 1. Quarterscores: 25-21; 42-36; 60-62; 86-83.
