Easternians pick 2 titles

CEBU Eastern College ruled the 3-point shootout Team category and the 2-ball competitions, while Sacred Heart School-Jesuit and University of San Carlos also stamped their class Sunday at the conclusion of the Inter-Alumni Basketball Association’s 2nd Edgar Cokaliong Memorial Cup at the City Sports Club-Cebu.

Dreaded triggerman Chester C. Cokaliong dropped three 2-point balls in the final round to spur CEC-Shell ’70s, also composed of Nelson Uy, Guillermo Tiu, Danny Calagos, and Rafael Tan, to the 3-point Team championship with 10 points.

It was a 1-2 finish for the Eastenians as CEC Eco-Tech Appliance ’96 of Gerald Go, Arniel Frank Pelaez, Jennis Lim, Gerald Chua and Rex Alinson bagged the silver with nine points, while coming in third with eight points was USC-Oclar ’95 manned by Christian Solon, Bernard Alonzo, Ryan Rodis, Dodge Bugtai and Ronald Mata.

3-point shootout

In the individual 3-point tiff, Cokaliong duplicated his first runner-up finish during the inaugural season, but the sweet-shooting league forerunner prides himself as the only survivor among last year’s top three winners.

Cokaliong fired 13 points, three short of this year’s champion Dennis Que of SHS-Fighter Wine ’90 as Sacred Heart retained its 3-point king title. Henrich Chua of CEC ’87 scored 12 to land at third, while Paul Abais of USC ’70s was fourth with 11 markers. Eric Casas of SHS-Kirsten Int’l/Fortune Shipworks ’84, the 2002 titleholder, and second runner-up Raul Monterroyo of USC-Rudy Project ’88 did not make it to the final round.

2-ball

On the other hand, the CEC-Kleberton Builders ’98 tandem of Rex Millan and Luther Bryan Tan cashed in 26 points to lord it over in the 2-ball competition, relegating USC-Ho Tong Hardware ’70s’ Austin Rebollido and Roel Monterroyo to second with 20 points.

Anwar Satina and Anthony Chua of CEC-Cebu Chinatown/Dendramil Merchandizing ’94 and Arturo Pepito Mata and Edwin Gabas of USC-Osaka Iridology ’86 both scored 19 points, but the Easternians lifted the third-place trophy by beating USC in the tiebreaker, 29-15.

The Carolinians stole part of the limelight courtesy of Ray Jumao-as of 2003 season champion USC ’93, who ruled the free-throw shooting contest by drilling in six consecutive shots from the 4.5-meter line.

Michael Balangkig of USC ’80 was second with four, while Philip Lim of CEC-Santa Clara Plywood ’88 settled for third with three. The closing rites of the second season of the country’s biggest alumni-based cage fraternity went on smoothly with Cebu City Councilor Manuel Legaspi and Nestor Archival gracing the affair, along with Lorega-San Miguel Brgy. Capt. Fortunato Parawan and his Sambag I counterpart Jerry L. Guardo.

Also in attendance was the Cokaliong matriach, Gregoria, wife of the late Edgar Cokaliong, to whom the tournament is named after.
