Hapee pulls even By Rommel C. Manlosa
THE Hapee Sparkling Knights came out aggressive and displayed their tenacity as they forged a winner-take-all game for the CBF-Lapu-Lapu City Mayor’s Cup after tying the best-of-three championship following an 84-76 win Sunday night in Game 2 over Grachiya Energy Drink at the Lapu-Lapu City Sports Auditorium.
The game, which was supposed to be played last Saturday, saw a very different Sparkling Knights as they waxed hot at the onset behind the outside and inside games of Reed Friar Juntilla and Jeric Araño, who led Hapee in scoring.
Hapee played steady in the first two quarters before pulling away for good in the third as it left Grachiya with a 19-14 blitz to start the final quarter ahead by 12 points, 62-49.
Flashy point-guard Mawi Huelar also had steady contribution as he delivered 12 points after being held scoreless in Game 1, while Leodi Garcia scored 10 mostly in the paint.
It was a breakout game for Araño, who is usually used as a reliever for Patrick Benedicto, who was held by Grachiya’s defense to just four points in Game 2. Araño showed his intensity in both running and set-up plays, while Juntilla made his presence felt with his fearless slashing skills.
Ronald Paraiso tried to bail out the Energy Boosters, but his efforts, along with those of pivot men John Velasco and Bernie Ursal, were not enough.
Missing in coach Titing Manalili’s offense were the contributions of Pablo Tecson and Ranulfo Abo, who only scored six and two points, respectively.
Game 3 was still played last night at press time.
