Serna: Kris-Joey ‘telenovela’: life is stranger than fiction
By Roger Serna

From the looks of it, the public, which feasted on the Kris Aquino-Joey Marquez break-up, is not satisfied with the ending of the real-life “telenovela.” Suddenly, all the debates, the banters, the speculations, the jokes and everything seem to have gone with the wind.

Some found the development anti-climactic and have left hanging those who have been religiously following the unfolding of events. Come on, folks. Let’s give it to them. In the first place it was supposed to be a private thing that was blown out of proportion for the simple reason that the parties involved happened to be public figures.

So, for those who wanted a very dramatic ending to that relationship gone sour, with all the trimmings that a locally-produced film can give, I guess we just have to accept the fact that sometimes life is indeed stranger than fiction. And that scripts (if any) are changed at the last minute without us expecting it.

Aside from Joey’s ex-wife, Alma Moreno, another show biz personality willingly basked in the limelight at the height of the controversy and dished out her signature “grammatically challenged” statements that somehow added humor to the otherwise serious scenario.

Melanie Marquez blurted blunders one after the other which shocked those who were still not around when she won honors for the country being the second Filipina to win the Miss International title many years ago.

However, for those who are already familiar with Melanie, those error-laden statements just gave them the push to smile, laugh or just shrug their shoulders. Credit should go to the former beauty queen and supermodel for her guts and for stealing the limelight away from the main protagonists even for just a short time.

Cebuana singer-actress Vina Morales might stage a Valentine concert in a bigger venue (most probably the grand ballroom of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino) if plans don’t miscarry.

The favorable outcome of Vina’s show at the Budyong Hall of the Casino Filipino Mactan has inspired a wealthy relative of the songbird to bankroll the project. Even right after the show, plans were already being readied to make the event push through.

From what this columnist witnessed during the show, Vina can very well handle a solo concert. An equally hot and talented guest performer (preferably a male) will make the event worth looking forward to.

If ever the plan will materialize, who would you like to share the stage with Vina as guest? Piolo Pascual is one of those being floated. Good choice.

Finally, the Cebuanos have tasted the “Starbucks experience” with the opening of the 56th outlet of the internationally famous coffee. The Cebu media and some practitioners from Manila were gathered during the presscon and savored the coffee, the aroma that goes with it and tasty cakes and pastries that the outlet also sells.

The same crowd rubbed elbows with each other and the other invited guests from the other sectors of Cebu society later that night. The enthusiasm was just one of the ways Cebuanos wanted to convey the message, that is, “Welcome to Cebu, Starbucks!”

The Sharon Cuneta-Aga Muhlach starrer Kung Ako Na Lang Sana is already on its second-week run in Cebu moviehouses, as well as in other places in the country (the movie enjoys a simultaneous playdate, I presume) but as of this writing yours truly hasn’t watched it yet.

Noted playwright-director-musician Allan Jayme Rabaya, in a chat over the weekend, has good words for the movie. He said that the beauty of the project lies in its simplicity.

Needless to say, such a good review prodded me to squeeze movie watching into my already hectic weekend sked. Don’t want to miss a rare cinematic gem, do you?
