Cebu dominates Albay, 13-0, in Adidas U-19 tilt By Glenn C. Michelena
THE Cebu squad made clear its serious intent to do well in the 2003 Adidas National Open Under-19 tournament as it posted an impressive 13-0 shutout victory over Legaspi-Albay last Sunday at the La Paz football field in La Paz, Iloilo.
The 13-0 rout was the biggest margin so far in the tournament and cemented Cebu’s reputation as the competition heavyweight.
Earlier, in another impressive display of dominance, the Dipolog team, coached by a British national, blitzed the Cotabato City, 7-0, in the game before the Cebu-Legaspi tussle.
“Dipolog is the team to watch in this tournament,” said Johnny Romualdez, EVP of the Philippine Football Federation after the match. “The boys are playing superbly. They employ two-touch football so well.”
In the other matches, Butuan defeated Rizal, 3-1; Negros Occidental shut out the National Capital Region 4-0 and Iloilo likewise drubbed Masbate, 6-0.
All games were played at the La Paz field except the Iloilo-Masbate and the Rizal-Butuan matches, which were played at the Santa Barbara football field.
The Cebu team, composed of players selected via an open tryout conducted by the Cebu Football Association steering committee, include the University of the Visayas’ Elizer Pacubas (team captain), Martin Bontia, Julius Acre, Ivan Dimco, Ronald Mahilum, Junard Aguilar, Vermonel Resuena, Melvin Culibra, Randel Cano and Josepat Sacil.
The others are the University of Cebu’s Carlos Bolo, Arnie Pasinabo, Jack Reston, Glenn Quiriquitan, and Abellana National School’s Bryan Flores and Venjor Gamora. Heber Bout is the head coach, Frederik Alazas the trainer, Neil Montesclaros team manager and Maxi Maximo head of delegation.
