Fash rules CBF-PBL Dual Meet
By Rommel C. Manlosa

FASH Liquid Laundry Detergent held its ground and rode on big breaks to score a championship repeat over Grachiya Energy Drinks following an 86-76 victory to win the 2003 Adidas-Samsung CBF-PBL Dual Meet Year 2 title last night at the Cebu Coliseum.

Meanwhile, Mike Manigo sank a triple with only 5.9 seconds left to play to frustrate his former Cebu Gems teammates and lift Montaña to a 93-91 overtime victory over All Care Insurance in the battle for the third-place trophy.

Fash displayed an all-around game that gave Grachiya tough times with tournament MVP Reed Friar Juntilla displaying his exceptional skills to elude the tough defense.

The Liquid Detergents waxed hot early as they erected a 9-2 lead before Reggie Licanda rallied Grachiya to an 8-0 run to take the lead, 12-11. However, that was the only time Grachiya tasted the upper hand as Patrick Benedicto, Allan Salansang and Peter June Simon combined for an 11-4 counterattack to regain the lead for good.

With Benedicto providing additional scoring threat from outside, Grachiya had to play man-to-man defense to plug their defensive holes. But their efforts were not enough as Fash went to score more points by challenging the interior defense of the Energy Boosters.

Fash protected a double-digit lead most of the second quarter before Grachiya launched an energetic counter run anchored on Licanda’s triple that closed the first half, 37-44.

Grachiya gave Fash a scare in the third quarter, clipping the once 14-point lead down to 48-50, but Salansang, Simon and Juntilla made a crippling 7-0 blast before Pablo Tecson gave the Energy Boosters a triple that closed out the penultimate period.

An unsportsmanlike foul slapped on Tecscon early in the final quarter became a big stepping stone for Fash’s titular finish as it converted five points and went to reestablish a double-digit lead.

Grachiya could not cut down the lead fewer than seven points as Fash played heads-up basketball to deny the Energy Boosters for the second time in a championship series.
