Speaking from the heart By Troy Ciar
Renz Verano is one of today’s OPM greats whose songs have endeared millions of music-loving Filipino hearts.
It is impossible, especially for the masses, not to recognize that distinct, husky voice on the airlanes.
Renz has been in the recording business for eight years now and has quite a number of hits to his credit, such as the immortal Remember Me, Together Forever and Lorena.
Sun. Star Life and Leisure chanced upon him last Friday during the launching of his brand new album, Everyday, at SM City Entertainment Plaza, where he performed eight songs, including the carrier hit single of the same title, which was penned by veteran composer Vehnee Saturno.
The visit was made even more special by the presence of no less than Universal’s managing director and owner Bella Dy Tan, executive producer of the album, who was among the audience that afternoon.
“This is my eighth album but my first under Universal. I’m sure a lot of people can easily relate to my songs here,” Renz said during a dinner at the Sunburst Restaurant-SM branch right after the show.
Renz was born Laurence Roger Verano Mendoza. But because his mother’s family name has stronger recall in showbiz circles, he opted to be known as Renz Verano. He finished Bachelor of Science in Business Economics at the University of the Philippines, a degree that helped him establish his own bakery business, which is now producing for at least 40 outlets in Pasig.
Renz has been separated from his wife for three years. They have two kids, both teenagers, who are now living with him. He didn’t give specifics, but said that it’s difficult to be successful in all aspects of one’s life and that it’s always a case of “you win some-you lose some”.
“If I have no commitments, most of the time I’d rather stay at home. I watch HBO with my chichiriya,” he confides. “Ayoko na ng asawa, masakit lang sa ulo. Gusto ko girlfriend lang. Huwag lang yung may STD,” he joked.
Among the potential hits in his Everyday album are Isang Libong Dasal written by Arnie Mendaros
and Arnel Layug, Ba’t Nahayaan Ka, another song from Saturno, and Keep on Loving You, an adaptation of the song, I’m Sad (Wo Nan Quo), a hit by the Taiwanese group, 5566.
Most of his songs are about the laments of a broken heart, the celebration of love and the joy of loving, all these apparently speak very much of Renz’s own experiences.
This 10-track album is already available both in CD and cassette tapes under Universal Records.
