7 Cebu City pugs enter medal rd. By Rommel C. Manlosa
CEBU City boxing team bounced back from momentary collapse as seven of its fighters secured a sure bronze medal in the heels of upsets that rocked the campaign of its archrival Mandaue City yesterday in the quarterfinal round of the 2003 National Youth Amateur Open Boxing Championships at the CPG Gym in Tagbilaran City.
Cebu City’s march was led by the talented Alex John Banal, a three-time national gold medalist who eliminated Rollemer Quilojano of Panabo City by decision in the 48-kilogram match. Banal, fresh from a gun-poking incident by Bohol policeman SPO1 Ildefonso Gales III, toyed on the hapless Quilojano to advance into the next round.
Mandaue, on the other hand, lost its best shot for a gold when Reynaldo Caitom bowed to the aggressiveness of Alberto Yap Jr. of Cagayan de Oro City in the 41kg match. Caitom, who has had fever and cough for two weeks now, ran out of steam and yield the quarterfinal match to Yap via a 44-52 scoring.
Cebu City’s Robert Allanic is also off to the next round after defeating Mandaue City’s Danny Boy Bontilao with a Referee Stop Contest (RSC) victory in 1:12 of the opening round of the 51kg match, while Cesar Amonsot made another strong performance with the quickest knockout victory, beating Joy Robil of Bago City in 28 seconds of the first round of the 60kg division.
Ramon Allanic is also assured of a bronze medal after beating Marvin Lerio of North Cotabato, 52-51, in the 37kg quarterfinals.
Jojo Ouano also marched into the semifinal round after making easy work of Ramjie Mamalla of Capalong, Davao del Sur following an RSC win in 1:15 of the second round. Joseph Von Miñoza logged another sure bronze medal for Cebu City with a decision win over Aprilito Agcopra of Bohol Team A in the 36kg match.
