Iloilo, Laguna figure in final
By Glenn C. Michelena

IT’S going to be a Laguna-Iloilo clash for the title crown of the 2003 Adidas National Under-19 Junior Championships in Iloilo City.

Laguna, the Class C champ, notched a tough, 7-6 victory via penalty shootout over Class B kingpins Negros Oriental, while Class A leader Iloilo subdued Negros Occidental, the top Class D team, in their respective sudden-death semifinal matches to win a slot in the championship game at the Santa Barbara football field yesterday.

Laguna will meet Iloilo, hometown favorites of the tournament, today at 3 p.m. at the Santa Barbara.

On another note, the Cebu Football Association (CFA)-Informatics’ squad’s hopes of making the semifinals died last Tuesday when Laguna defeated Cagayan de Oro, 3-1, and vaulted to the top of the Class C standings.

Since only one club per class can enter the semifinals, Cebu was eliminated in the offing.

Had Cagayan defeated Laguna, it would’ve dropped Laguna to 2-1 and opened the door for the squad to advance to the semifinals. Since Cebu is at 2-1, it would have won the tiebreak over Laguna because of the Cebuanos’ 21-14 edge in the goal-difference quotient.

Laguna’s triumph had to be painful for Cebu, since not only did it eliminate them, Laguna was also the same club that dealt Cebu their only loss in the competition. That loss eventually resulted into an uneasy predicament for Cebu, as their chances of advancing to the semis were now dependent on how Laguna would fare against Cagayan.

The Cebu team, composed of players selected via an open tryout conducted by the Cebu Football Association steering committee, include the University of the Visayas’ Elizer Pacubas (team captain), Martin Bontia, Julius Acre, Ivan Dimco, Ronald Mahilum, Junard Aguilar, Vermonel Resuena, Melvin Culibra, Randel Cano and Josepat Sacil.

The others are the University of Cebu’s Carlos Bolo, Arnie Pasinabo, Jack Reston, Glenn Quiriquitan, and Abellana National School’s Bryan Flores and Venjor Gamora. Heber Bout is the head coach, Frederik Alazas the trainer, Neil Montesclaros team manager and CFA President Jonatan “Maxi” Maximo head of delegation.

Aside from the trophies for the top three teams, medals were also awarded to the champions and runners-up along with the Chris Monfort Fair Play trophy and individual awards, which include the Most Valuable Player Award, Best Striker, Best Goalkeeper, Best Defender and Best Midfielder.
