Niños retain boxing title
By Rommel C. Manlosa

CEBU City stood pat against strong oppositions to retain its distinction as the country’s top producer of world-class amateur fighters after keeping the 2003 National Youth Amateur Open Boxing Championships at the CPG Gym in Tagbilaran City yesterday.

The Boxing Niños ruled both Division I and II after sending nine fighters to the finals. Six went on to bring home the gilt – more than enough to retain the title they won last year when Cebu City hosted the national championships.

Cebu City’s Division I fighters won two golds and one silver, while had four gold medals in Division II. Aside from the title, Cebu City nearly swept the special awards.

The Niños were adjudged Most Disciplined Team, Peter Cuizon won the Best Coach plum, and Cesar Amonsot, the Bohol native who won the 60-kilogram gold for Cebu City, won the Best Boxer award in Division II.

Cesar Amonsot, who is a native of Bohol Province Cebu City’s four-time national gold-medal winner Alex John Banal scored one of the biggest wins in the tournament when defeated former Philippine Developmental Pool member Norberto Lerio, who is four years older than older the 14-year-old Banal, for the 48kg gold. The scorecards had the Cebuano fighter narrowly up, 55-53.

Amonsot, who has now collected three national gold medals, won his fight by retirement after his opponent from Davao City turned his back after receiving telling blows in the opening bell.

Other Cebu City boxers who won gold medals were Enrico Gunhuran, who won by Referee Stop Contest for the 57kg gold medal, and Robert Allanic, who beat Glen Porras of North Cotabato for the 51kg gold medal in Division II.

Jojo Ouano won the 38kg gold medal and Marjo Borres brought home the 38kg division gilt in
Division I.

Mandaue City, who settled for first runner-up in overall standings, had Rollen del Castillo, the Best Boxer in Division I, winning the 42kg division and Joseph Omaña winning the 36kg gold. Mandaue City had two golds, one silver and two bronze medals. North Cotabato was second runner-up with one gold and five silvers.
