USC student tops shootfest By KARLON N. RAMA Sun.Star Reporter
PRACTICAL shooting wonder Sandino Cinco of the CPRA gun club in Lapu-Lapu City took home a pair of titles Saturday as over a hundred shooters from all over the Visayas rocked the quiet city of Dumaguete to shoot it out for the 1st Gov. George Arnaiz Cup.
The 18-year-old Cinco, who had to take his final examination at the University San Carlos a week in advance to be able to join the tournament, won the gold in the Open division and the Junior division special award. Steve “Tiba” Lim and Albino Solon were second and third, respectively, in the Open division.
His shooting mentor, Lito Ladroma of Casey Gun Club in Lapu-Lapu, scored the highest in the overall Standard division, but conceded the award to Bacolod’s Bebot Verano, who originally ranked second. His score qualified Ladroma for the top stop in the Range Officers’ Standard category and he opted to cash-in his victory there.
“Many of these shooters were my students. I’m happy that they are all doing well,” Ladroma said after competing his round. Ladroma handles the basic and advanced shooting course for Casey Gun Club, the melting pot for most of Cebu’s top-caliber shooters.
The five-stage, IPSC Level 1-sanctioned competition hosted by the Dumaguete Shootists’ Association (DSA), which drew 114 shooters from Negros, Siquijor, Dipolog, Cebu and Iloilo, was dominated by the Casey Gun Club and the CPRA range in Lapu-Lapu, the Gold Cup Gun Club in Mandaue, the Kamagong Gun Club in Cebu City, and the Front Sight Gun Club in Minglanilla.
Nogie Biagan and Roger Uy clinched the remaining spots for the Standard category, together with Gold Cup’s Yogi Javier who took a special title for competing single-stack.
Police Supt. Art Evangelista of the Police Center for Airport Security, for his part, won top spot in the Modified division, while the Production and the Revolver category went to Ismael Trinidad, of Gold Cup, and Jimmy Yu, of CPRA, respectively.
Albert Liao was second in the Modified division, while Adrian Tadena and Rey Romero, both of Front Sight Gun Club, were second and third in the Production. Cesar Jalandoni and Front Sight’s William Torrefiel filled in the second and third spots for the Revolver category.
In the Range Officer class, it was Rae Solon and Joe Montalvan in the Open division’s first and second spots. Inno Solon, meanwhile, ranked second to Ladroma in the Standard category, while Ramos and Fabillar took the two spots in the Production division.
For the Lawman class, the Standard division went to SPO2 Bobby Aldefolia of the Mandaue City Special Weapons and Tactics. He beat Cebu City Swat’s Adonis Dumpit, who competed with a foot injury.
Concrado Alega, Tolentino Crisaleo and Gil Limosnero, meanwhile, topped the special category’s Production division while Restituto Grado clinched the Revolver title.
Faye Solon Go, who competed with Front Sight’s lady protégé, 15-year-old Elena Singson, meanwhile took the Ladies division gold.
DSA president Roy Cang said the competition, their third big event for the year, was a success: “We didn’t think there would be so many participants.”
The competition tasked shooters to take on a five-stage course of fire designed by International Range Officer Gasat “Bot” Ramos.
Stage 1, officiated by International Range Officer Rudy Marcelo, was a short course and holster retention test that had shooters jumping off a three-foot platform and engaging five targets, three behind a barricade.
Stage 2, officiated by Ric Roa, was another short course that had shooters lying down at startup then, at start signal, running to a table to retrieve a firearm to engage six targets, while Stage 3, officiated by Corcord Fabillar, was a medium course that had nine targets, two of them popper-activated swinging boards.
Stage 4 was a long course, officiated by veteran shooter Lito Ladroma, that had shooters engage 14 paper targets, two of them partially blocked by a no-shoot board, and four metal targets, two of them being metal plates barely 12” in diameter.
The fifth stage, a medium course officiated by Jerome Lim, meanwhile had shooters engage 10 targets, two of them poppers and two of them plates.
Although a Level 1 match, the 1st Gov. George Arnaiz cup was no walk in the park, with a total of four shooters disqualified for unsafe gun handling. |
