Bohol’s dolphin, whale watch group partners with Smart
By Jessica B. Natad

THE tourism potential of Bohol’s Pamilacan Island Dolphin and Whale Watching Organization (Pidwwo) is expected to flourish after it partnered with a cellular phone operator.

Pidwwo has linked with Smart Communications Inc. to help address the organization’s communication needs, according to a statement by Smart.

Under its Connecting Communities Program, Smart provided Pidwwo with a Smart link satellite phone that will be used to set up a “tawag center” in the area.

The satellite phone will help dolphin and whale spotters with their eco-tourism activities and make bookings for trips and tours more convenient. It will also enable them to connect with friends and relatives in the city and abroad.

Smart’s Connecting Communities Program gives far-flung areas access to affordable wireless telecom services that will help boost economic activities in the area.

Meanwhile, Smart inaugurated another wireless laboratory, this time in Iloilo City, under the company’s Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program (Sweep).

The newest lab is in the West Visayas College of Science and Technology, a state college. The school has close to 9,000 students, with 1,000 enrolled in engineering courses.

The cellular arm of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. is actively pursuing the implementation of Sweep in selected schools nationwide to help improve electronics and communications engineering education.

Smart’s wireless laboratories can be found at Bulacan State University, University of San Carlos Technological Center in Cebu City, University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City and Notre Dame University in Koronadal, South Cotabato.

The labs give students hands-on experience with mobile telephone equipment.
