Ruiz ‘shuns’ interviews on Davide impeachment By Aledel A. Gonzales
DESPITE the flak she is getting for signing the impeachment complaint against Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr., Rep. Nerissa Soon-Ruiz (Cebu, 6th district) has chosen to stay mum to avoid further antagonizing people.
Among others, the Mandaue City Council, former Mandaue City mayor Alfredo “Pedong” Ouano and even Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal have asked her to reconsider her decision.
As godfather and relative, Ouano is urging Ruiz to withdraw her signature from the impeachment complaint against Davide. (The former mayor was one of Ruiz’s wedding sponsors.)
Sun.Star’s calls to the congresswoman’s mobile phone have been unanswered since Sunday.
Lawyer Gonzalo Malig-on, Ruiz’s chief of staff, admitted yesterday that he himself received “hate messages” against Ruiz through text.
Unpopular
“She understands the sentiments of the Cebuanos but she just stands by what she believes in. It just happened that she took an unpopular stand,” Malig-on said in a telephone interview.
Malig-on also said talks about her party affiliation influencing her decision is more acceptable than rumors that she accepted millions for her to sign the impeachment complaint.
“That’s just unfair,” he said.
“Time will come for this issue to cool and we can talk about it. Eventually, she will be understood,” he added.
In a separate interview, Ouano said he is setting aside personal differences with Davide and is giving his support to the Cebuano chief justice.
Davide was an opposing counsel in one of the cases that Ouano faced.
Ouano also said Ruiz should also consider Vidal’s statements.
“When will we have another one like Davide?” Ouano said.
The Mandaue City Council, for its part, passed a resolution asking Ruiz and Rep. Joseph Ace Durano (Cebu, 5th district) to withdraw their signatures from the impeachment complaint against Davide and “be one with the people.”
In a pastoral statement, Vidal appealed to the “sense of patriotism and basic decency” of Ruiz and Durano “to uphold the interest of the country first.”
