Wenceslao: Those anti-Davide solons
By Bong Wenceslao

It looks like Reps. Nerissa Soon-Ruiz and Joseph “Ace” Durano are hopeless cases. They are playing deaf to calls for them to withdraw their signatures in the impeachment complaint against Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. Rep. Antonio Cuenco said he tried to talk with Ruiz, but the latter instead persuaded him to support her.

When Ruiz was still a member of the Provincial Board, somebody told me this woman was once a student activist. How things change. She has become trapo to the bone. So, too with Durano.
People used to consider him the better Durano when he first burst into the local political scene. At the rate he’s going, he may become the worst one.

But while stabbing a fellow and innocent Cebuano is bad, what can one say of congressmen who mis-appreciate their integrity and intellectual worth? I am referring to the “spokesmen” of the pro-impeachment cabal, like Reps. Gilbert Remulla, Felix William Fuentebella (a.k.a.—and I am not joking—Wimpy) and Gilbert Teodoro.

Everytime I hear them attack Davide on television like he was their inferior, I get this urge to throw rotten tomatoes at their faces. Frankly, these young upstarts, to borrow fellow columnist Juan Mercado’s phrase, “are not even fit to wipe the Chief Justice’s shoes.” And yet they are now strutting around like they are God’s gift to Congress.

What have Remulla, Fuentebella and Teodoro to show so far as legislators? The truth is, these youngsters only became congressmen because they are descendants of political warlords (just like Durano, of course) and not because they are the most capable in their congressional districts. If not for this, they are as ordinary as, well, you and me.

I have been receiving text messages asking Sun.Star Cebu to publish the names of those who signed the impeachment complaint. Indeed, it is good to remember their names as some of them may run for the Senate and campaign here in Cebu (like perhaps Rep. Miguel Zubiri and Carlos Padilla). Then we can prepare a lot of rotten tomatoes.

P.S. Text Reax contributors are, as expected, up in arms against the impeachment of Chief Justice Davide. Here are a few of the messages:

Vic Baguio of Matab-ang, Cordova, Cebu: “As long as powerful men favor their vested interests over the plight of the majority, this country won’t go anywhere. Who said change should start from us ordinary mortals? Who’s holding the steering wheel, by the way?”

Jul S. Cortes of Mandaue City: “If I get the list of the congressmen who signed the impeachment complaint, I will add their names to the list of politicians I will not vote for. I may be only one but that is already one less vote on them.”

Edgar Yuson of Cordova, Cebu: “Nasayop ko pagbotar ni Soon-Ruiz. Abi man nako og tarong na siya. Siya ang angay nga i-impeach.”

Max Gabucan of P. del Rosario Ext., Cebu City: “Evil cannot prevail over good as people are now vigilant. Bad congressmen can’t put a good man down.”

Roger Cańezo of Pinamungajan, Cebu: “If President Arroyo fails to stop the (transmittal of the impeachment complaint to the Senate), then that will be her biggest loss. Wa na gyoy mobotar niya. Bakakon na, hudas pa.”

Signus Megido: “Scoundrels in government want to remove Davide because honorable public servants like him block their effort to rape our country.”
