Minibus-trailer crash injures 83-year-old
AN 83-YEAR-OLD woman and two others were injured when the minibus they were riding rammed into a trailer truck that was turning left from the other side of the road in Minglanilla town yesterday afternoon.
The truck had just delivered construction materials to a gasoline station under renovation and was on its way back to Cebu City when struck by the minibus.
The police said the victims blamed the minibus driver for the mishap, saying the minibus tried to force its way ahead of the trailer.
PO3 Harrison Quiñanola, Minglanilla traffic investigator, said Basilia Aleson, 83, of Bolinawan, Carcar town, suffered a wound to the forehead when she bumped her head on the seat in front of her.
Eva Juntilla, 40, of Valladolid, Carcar, also suffered contusions and bruises, while Jerby Baseo, 30, of Tungkop, Minglanilla town, injured her mouth during the crash.
Quiñanola said the trip was an unlucky one for Baseo, who rode the mini-bus (GWM 594) just moments before the incident happened.
“She just embarked near the plaza and the minibus had just traveled around 300 to 400 meters when the accident happened, ” he said in Cebuano.
He quoted both Juntilla and Baseo as saying mini-bus driver Lito Angcay, 25, of Perrelos, Carcar, forced his way past the trailer truck.
The minibus ended ramming into the right front wheel of the trailer truck.
The incident happened in Barangay Pungtod just a few meters from the Petron gasoline station.
Quiñanola said that after picking up Baseo near the town plaza around 2:30 p.m., the minibus, which was from Carcar town, then raced towards Cebu City.
The trailer truck, driven by Sergio Tarega, 55, of A. Lopez St., Cebu City, on the other hand, was leaving the gasoline station, which was on the other side of the road.
Quiñanola said Angcay saw the trailer truck cross the highway from the other side and veer left for Cebu City.
But instead of slowing down to allow the trailer truck to complete its maneuver, Angcay tried to drive past the truck.
All victims were rushed to Minglanilla District Hospital for treatment.
They were, however, allowed to go home afterwards because none of them suffered serious injuries.
The incident happened just a day after at least 44 persons were injured when a Ceres bus tried avoiding a cargo truck and instead hit a tree and an electric pole in Argao town around 4 a.m. last Saturday.
One of the victims lost a limb after his left arm got severed when the sides of the bus and the truck scraped against each other. RHM
