Diamond fiesta By Edgar R. Chiongbian Tee time
Have you been to barrio Country Club? Okay not really a barrio but a barrio fiesta look-alike that Cebu Country Club has been transformed into for its Diamond Anniversary celebration. The whole place is decked out with brightly arranged buntings common to barrio fiestas to compliment the array of lights.
There’s bunting to the right of you, bunting to the left of you, bunting in front of you, bunting in back of you and bunting above you. A familiar jargon if you were a declaimer in high school. They must have bought out a bunch of stores in the city just to fill the order.
The family night last Tuesday was so successful, that the food prepared for one thousand people was gobbled up in matter of minutes. I believe this was the first time a party was ever expressly designed to feed the members and their dependents. Saturday’s awards night is expected to be big too with an entertainment showcase and dancing to two types of bands; a Latin band and a renaissance band; Ole’ and groovy’ to you partner!
The individual match play between the United States and International teams at the Presidents Cup in George, South Africa was so exciting that a script could not have been written any better. This was as good as it can get and better than the Tin Cup movie. No one could predict an ending with so much dramatics and twists that eventually ended in a draw.
When teams nominated Tiger and Els to represent them, it was without doubt the soundness judgment made by the players. Had the International team chosen Vijay to defend against Tiger (No.1 vs. No.2), it would have been a blowout for either one because they are not friendly with each other and the psyche would have been too much to handle.
The recent jungolf alumni competition between the eighties and the nineties also ended in a draw. It goes to show that “these guys are good,” just like what the PGA commercial says. Congratulations to both teams for living up to the expectations of their peers.
On a smaller scale a team match-up between Ramon Sebastian and Nestor
Mendoza against Ben Gothong and Nolan Rada ended technically in a draw too. After game six, Ramon declared their team the winner by two points. But upon further review it was found that Ben’s team would qualify for two extra points for a “salami,” so the tie. If you’re confused, don’t worry – so am I. And that is the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help them guys.
Now it is time to report the results of the Federation of Seniors Golf tournament at Mercedes Plantation in Bogo. With the exception of the mature seniors winner Renato Go, there was some debate about the other two champions.
Why? Because the super senior champion is no other than Bombi Aznar, the chairman of the Federation of Seniors, and the champion for the young seniors is no other than the president of Mercedes Plantation G&CC Ed Misa, who had a lowest net score of 56 strokes. Crocodile or buaya maybe but I think they had a secret plan.
As the president of the golf club and chairman of the federation, they
both connived to move the white tees all the way to the front (ladies tee?). I think to confuse the players so that they couldn’t score, but of course not the two because it was tailor made for their game. Short drives ha guys!
Golf Tip: On bunker shots, it is very important to wriggle your feet in the sand when preparing for the shot. This will give a firm footing that promotes an upper body swing with the hands, wrist and arms. Lower body action should always be kept to a minimum so you will not lose your balance and mishit the shot.
Twisting your feet in the sand can help determine the sands’ texture. So by knowing whether the sand is soft or firm, you can plan on where to land your clubhead in the sand. The general rule is to hit two inches behind the ball for soft sand and about one inch or closer for firm sand. Also consider using a pitching wedge for firm sand to avoid the bouncing effect of the sand wedge.
