GENERAL Feeds Mega Mix played efficiently down the shaded lane to overthrow defending champion Grachiya Energy Drinks, 85-74, and wrest the Adidas-Samsung 2003 CBF Metro Gaisano Commissioners Cup title Wednesday night at the Compostela Sports Complex.

The victory gave Mega Mix a 2-1 victory in the best-of-three championship series.

Disadvantaged

The Feeds Masters attacked the handicapped frontline of the Energy Boosters in securing the crown, which is General Feeds mentor Jun Tan’s second in the two-year-old league. They won the league’s first-ever title – the Charter Cup – in March of 2002.

“I am very happy because this is my second regular title. The first was during the start of the league and it took four regular conferences to win another one,” said Tan.

General Feeds won two invitational titles under the mentorship of Edsel Vallena, though those victories weren’t as sweet as winning a regular title.

Lifeline

Tan emphasized that he had already anticipated the Energy Boosters to concentrate their defense on the outside gunners of General Feeds, which was their lifeline ever since.

“Everybody knew that we bank on our outside shooting, so we anticipated that they would concentrate their defense on our shooters. So thinking this would be their strategy, we went strong inside. We attacked their frontcourt and made drop passes, when it would be very tight,” said Tan.

Surprised by the aggressiveness of the Feeds Masters, Grachiya failed to counter as General Feeds quickly posted a 29-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. General Feeds dictated the tempo from there, while Grachiya struggled to adjust its defensive alignment.

And when Grachiya started collapsing its defense on the inside, General Feeds began unleashing its outside bombs.

“Grachiya tried to adjust its defense in the last quarter, so we shifted back to our outside shooting because the defense loosened up already. Luckily our shots were sinking and we kept our poise down the stretch,” said Tan.

Top scorer

Jett Latonio led the assault for the Feeds Masters as he scattered 24 points after being held to just four points in Game 2, while Alex Cainglet doled out his usual numbers after scoring only three points last Sunday.

Jaymann Misola and Alfie Grijaldo also finished in double digits, while the contributions
of Christopher Daruca from the outside also gave the Feeds Masters additional leverage.

Jan Montalbo led the losing cause of Grachiya finishing with 14 points, while Bernie Ursal, who played gallantly despite having seven stitches on his eyebrows, finished with 13 points.

As consolation, Grachiya’s swingman Roy Lura bagged the highest individual award – the Most Valuable Player trophy after he topped all statistical departments.

General Feeds (85) – Latonio 24, Cainglet 15, Misola 13, Grijaldo 12, Daruca 9, Concha 5, Yu 4, Arnado 3. Grachiya (74) – Montalbo 14, Ursal 13, Tecson 13, Lura 10, Paraiso 10, Velasco 6, Mercado 4, Estrera 2, Isidro 2.
