Part of jewelry, money stolen in Cagayan returned to owners
By Aledel A. Gonzales

A MAN detained on vagrancy charges in Mandaue City turned out to be the suspect in the robbery of jewelry and cash in Cagayan de Oro City.

At least P100,000 worth of jewelry and cash that were stolen from a
couple in Cagayan was recovered in Mandaue in a joint operation by the Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) and the Regional Intelligence and Investigation Division (RIID) last Dec. 8.

The items were turned over to owners Fransisco and Leticia Ong at the
MCPO yesterday morning.

The couple has an internet café and jewelry business in Cagayan de Oro City.

They reported the loss of the items worth some P500,000 to the Precinct 1 of Cagayan de Oro City last Dec. 1. A week later, policemen from Mandaue and RIID collared a suspect in a hotel in Barangay Subangdaku.

No ID

Lemuel de la Peña, 30, of Mendoza Compound, Patag, Cagayan de Oro City was detained on vagrancy charges. He was not able to produce valid identification.

He had claimed ownership of the jewelry he had with him in room 309.

Police recovered seven necklaces, nine rings, 12 pairs of earrings, four pendants, 10 P500 bills, three P20 bills, a Nokia 3310 and six official receipts from three pawnshops.

De la Peña was released from the Subangdaku Police Station and was sent back to Cagayan de Oro City on the night of Dec. 10.

A day after, the Ong couple called Chief Insp. Juanito Enguerra of the MCPO.

Enguerra said that the Ong couple is filing charges against de la Peña.

Trace

According to Enguerra, the police team was able to trace de la Peña after following leads based on information reported to the RIID about large quantities of jewelry pawned in different shops in Cebu City.

A man and a woman reportedly pawned the items and immediately tore the receipts in front of the pawnshop.

Enguerra added that the Ong couple fell victim to the “tiempo” style of robbery, wherein the victim’s attention is diverted while his belongings are taken.
