Helping save Cebu’s marine resources

COASTAL Conservation and Education Foundation Inc. (formerly Sulu Fund) was established in January 1998 to support marine conservation in the Philippines.

The name Sulu Fund was derived from the Philippines southern Sulu Sea, which recognized for its extremely high level of marine biodiversity, said to be unequalled in the world.

Its formation was initiated by a dedicated group of individuals with a desire to address critical marine conservation needs of the Philippines and armed with knowledge based on experience.

The initial activities that ultimately culminated in the formal organization of Sulu Fund started in the 1980s through coral reef monitoring by Dr. Alan White.

Reef monitoring expanded in the early and mid-1990s through the assistance of Earthwatch Institute in locations such as Batangas, Tubbataha Reef and sites in the Central Visayas.

As interest grew in these activities and funding was made accessible, technical assistance to selected marine protected areas become the rationale for formalizing the CCEF to undertake a wider range of coastal management activities.

In 1998, the Sulu Fund (now the CCEF) was organized by a group of persons active in marine conservation around the Philippines.
