Cebu marksmen dominate Mayor Cari Cup shootfest
By Karlon N. Rama

A SQUAD of Cebu shooters took Leyte by storm last Sunday, annihilating local favorites in the Mayor Boying Cari Cup practical shooting competition in Baybay.

The squad, all of Casey Gun Club in Lapu-Lapu City, won the gold in four of the five divisions in the match sponsored by the Leyte Shooters Association (Leysa), as well as clinching one special award.

Opend division

Veteran shooter Lito Ladroma and Joe Montalvan, shooting as a guest for Casey, won the gold and silver, respectively, in the Open division, while Benson Yu and Ric Bono harvested the top prize in the Standard and Modified divisions, respectively.

Bono scored big-time by clinching the Open/Modified division Seniors’ category, outscoring Ladroma in their long-running friendly rivalry on who’s the best “ole’ gun” around.

For his part, Dino Ang, whose been absent in the past couple of matches, proved he’s still in top form as he clinched the gold in the Production division, beating local favorite Danny Torrevillas of the Ormoc Gun Club (Orgun).

This left only the gold in the Standard Revolver category to the host team, which shooter Mike Torrevillas grabbed.

At the local front, Casey Gun Club’s Chito Hernandez also scored big Sunday, as he won the Open division top spot in the Kamagong Gun Club-hosted pistol and rifle “Pre-Ban Shoot.”

Hernandez beat brothers Justine and Jonathan Chua, both of the CPRA club, in the six-man match-up that included shooters Vic Jarina, also of CPRA, Boy Bautista and Jun Liao.

Justine took second while big-brother Jonathan took third.

In the Modified division, veteran shooter We Tiak Chua, Justine and Jonathan’s dad, however, proved that he is still the man to beat as he dominated the competition with almost 200 match points up the closest rival, Jarina. Shooter Jeffrey Alce of the host club took third.

Close battle

Veteran shooters Nogie Biagan of the Casey Gun Club, Roger Uy of CPRA, and Yogi Javier of Gold Cup Gun Club dominated the hotly contested Standard division match as Ismael Trinidad, Jimmy Yu and Tyrone Mercader took the three top spots in the parallel Production division.

Mercader, shooting for the host club, also scored big in the Shotgun category, beating seven others in the category.

Philippine Practical Shooting Association area director Manuel Tan, shooting for Gold Cup Gun Club, was second, while Roy de los Santos, also shooting for the host club, clinched third.

De los Santos made up for this third-place win in the Rifle category, where he took the top spot over Tan, who placed second, and Mercader, who ended third.
