Poverty, meat imports hurt hog feeds sales

THE economic condition of the country, meat importation and calamities hurt the hog-feeds industry this year, according to an industry executive.

Emeverto Zalavarria, area vice president and manager for national feeds operation-feeds business of San Miguel Foods Inc. (SMFI), said a country with a depressed economic condition has less intake of protein or meat products.

“Economically hard-up countries are usually carbohydrate-country. The diet is composed mostly of carbohydrates such as rice and noodles,” he said on the sidelines of Bmeg’s raffle draw at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino Monday.

Zalavarria, however, said the industry is still looking at brighter prospects because the industry also grows with the population.

This year, he said, the performance of the hog-feeds industry in general, including Bmeg, was not as good as last year’s partly because of the country’s importation of meat products, as well as the natural calamities that hit the country this year.

Zalavarria said the industry was indirectly affected by the meat importation of meat processors, which resulted in the decline in the prices of meat products in the country.

“Because of this, hog raisers, especially those doing business in their own backyards, are discouraged to go on with their businesses and instead sell their hogs,” he said.

Earlier, Philippine Association of Meat Processors Inc. executive director Francisco Buencamino said meat processors were importing only manufacturing-grade meat, such as fat and skin, which are needed for making processed meats.

He said these kinds of meat were not found locally because most local hog raisers produce table-grade meat or the “pampalengke” meat like the pork chop, belly and steaks.

Bmeg products include Hog pellets and Jumbo Pullet Developer pellets, which are produced at Marvick Feedmill here in Cebu.
