Register boats: Coast Guard urges owners By Garry Cabotaje
THE Cebu Coast Guard (CG) yesterday called on boat owners to register their watercraft that will join the annual fluvial procession on Jan. 17 in honor of the Señor Sto. Niño.
Cebu CG Station Chief Elson Hermogino advised boat owners to visit his office at Pier 3, Cebu City and bring copies of their vessel documents for registration.
These documents include the Marina registration, the certificate of inspection and licenses of boat captain and crew.
As of yesterday, only three motorboats registered at the CG headquarters.
Hermogino said the CG accepts motorboats weighing not more than 250 gross tonnage. The last day of registration will be on Jan. 14.
CG officials will hold a briefing with boat operators on the fluvial formation at the CG headquarters and also discuss contingency measures on Jan. 15.
Hermogino warned that the CG will not allow unregistered boats to join in the formation of the flotilla.
“But if we cannot prevent them, then these unregistered boats and the late-comers will be placed at the end of the fluvial formation,” he said.
Hermogino plans now to let larger boats to follow right after the vessel that carries the image of the Señor Sto. Niño.
He said the move is to prevent other smaller boats from inching closer to the vessel carrying the Holy Child Jesus.
