Serna: Anna Fegi’s Homecoming Concert, Jan. 17

We’re fast approaching the peak of the whole Pista Senyor and Sinulog celebrations. Tomorrow, beautifully adorned seacraft will be an eyeful as they traverse the channel between Cebu mainland and Mactan island for the fluvial parade with the image of the Sto. Niño onboard one of the vessels.

In the afternoon, the solemn procession of the image of the Holy Child will be winding through Cebu city’s main thoroughfares. As expected, a throng of devotees will participate in the religious activity while others will just have to content themselves with watching at the sides to express the same fervor and devotion as with the others.

On Sunday, the grand parade will showcase the best Sinulog dancers from the city and neighboring places as well as those from faraway places who have either participated (and even won) in past outings or are trying their luck for the first time.

The city will be pulsating with the Sinulog beat and will be awash with colorful costumes and props, and will witness a variety of stunts and gimmicks from the participants who intend to get the attention of the judges and eventually their nod and approval.

Aside from the major and special prizes, new awards will be given out this year. From the female lead dancers of the contingents, the Sinulog Festival Queen will be chosen.

A special prize will also be awarded to the contingent with the best musicality. For videographers, a prize will be given to the best five-minute Sinulog documentary.

To all the participants, the visitors and everybody, Pit Senyor!

It’s good that the Sinulog organizers have issued the stern warning to those who are gunning for different positions in the coming elections to stay away from the celebration and avoid making the socio-cultural affair, which has a religious base, as a tool for politicking.

That way, the essence of the celebration will not be eclipsed or, worse, lost. There is always a right time for everything, and politicking and campaigning will have its turn.

But knowing how imaginative, creative and ingenious most of us are, for sure they’ll always find a way to turn things around. Just make them as discreet as possible.
Otherwise you’ll earn the ire of the devotees. Careful, every single vote counts. Ha-ha!

Tomorrow, another anticipated highlight of the celebration takes center stage at the Pacific Ballroom of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino starting at 8 p.m.
The Cebu Popular Music Festival, now on its 22nd staging, aims to select the best Cebuano composition and come up with more addition to the list of immortal Cebuano ditties.

This year’s finalists (with their respective composers) are: Bunga nga Mapupo (Agelio Ceniza), Kabataan (Jaime Pardillo), Kakugi (Aida Rabutan), Among Panginabuhi (Roy Tabasa), Panaghiusa Batok sa Kalisdanan (Troy Ciar), Nanay (Fernando Rabutan);

Retokero (Erick Villarojo), Pangaliya (Jun Cabillar), Samad sa Kasingkasing (Onesimo Oclarit), Mamasurahay (Dennis Martin and Nonnie Tomada), Kabataan sa Kadalanan (Ali Anthony Arnibal), and Pamalandong (Lauro Flores).

From the titles, we can deduce that the finalists dwell on subjects like youth,
industry and hard work, means of livelihood, struggle against poverty, the “heart and light of every home” (mother), lifestyle, introspection and faith, among others. Too serious, huh!

A welcome development in this year’s outing is the selling of albums in CD during the finals night. They’re affordable at P250 per disc. The husband and wife team of Gani and Gloria Villarojo of Soundtraxx Production Studio is behind the undertaking. Good work, pals!

Local warblers (and Cebu pop favorite and winning interpreters) Elmer Cabahug, Girlie Lapinid, Boyet Lim and Star in a Million finalist Sheryn Mae Regis will lend their stage presence as guest performers to give the event more luster and glitter.

The ever-enduring Mutya Ochestra will of course be at hand to provide the live accompaniment. As in the past staging, media man Sam Costanilla and stunner Lou Dayoc will be the program hosts.

Big cash prizes are at stake for the top three winners, including a special prize for the best interpreter and additional cash prizes for composers whose works have landed in the finals for the first time.

May the best composition win! Long live Cebuano music!

Oh, for concert goers, Cebuana belter Anna Fegi will be at the Teatro Casino of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino for her “Homecoming Concert” also tomorrow, Jan. 17.

The show will start at 8 p.m. Shows featuring both homegrown talents and those from Manila and other places are also featured in various entertainment hubs in the metropolis. Take your pick and enjoy!

Happy Sinulog and Pit Senyor!
