The University of San Carlos honors Jesus P. Estanislao founder and restorer of institutions
Dr. Jesus P. Estanislao is one Cebuano we can be really be proud of. He has spent much of his career founding or rehabilitating institutions. This A.B. Economics Summa Cum Laude graduate of the University of San Carlos currently heads two institutes committed to governance reforms: the Institute of Corporate Directors, focused on corporate governance, and the Institute for Solidarity in Asia, with focus on national governance. Moreover, he is chairman of the Foundation for Community Building in the Asia-Pacific, Inc.
He has been appointed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to chair the President’s Governance Advisory Council. He also holds the title of University Professor at the University of Asia and the Pacific.
In 1998, he became the founding dean of the Asian Development Institute in Tokyo. From 1992 to 1997 he served as the founding president of the University of Asia and the Pacific which grew out of the Center for Research and Communication of which he was the founding executive director from 1969 to 1981.
After the 1986 People Power revolution, he was given the task of rehabilitating the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) which he completed in three years. In 1989, he served as Secretary of Socio-Economic Planning and director general of the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) and as Secretary of Finance in 1990 to 1992. Being the Philippines’ chief economic officer, he oversaw the economic recovery and reform program of the newly reinstalled democracy.
Soon after he left the government, Dr. Estanislao was asked by President Ramos to become the Philippine representative in Apec’s Eminent Persons Group. He was the Adviser during the Philippine chairmanship of Apec in 1996. He also served as the Philippine representative in Asean’s Eminent Persons Group on Vision 2020.
Estanislao's educational qualifications has boosted his career. After finishing his A.B. Economics and Ph.B at USC with flying colors, he taught at USC for sometime then went to Fordham University and attained his Master of Arts in Economics. Soon after, he received his Doctorate Degree in Economics in Harvard University where he was also a Teaching and Research Fellow.
His expertise had given him other important positions. He was a member, Metrobank Board of Directors (1999-2002), coordinator, Taskforce on Peer Assistance and Review Network of the Pacific Economic Coordination Council, president, Manila Hotel (1999), chairman, Financial Markets Development of the Pacific Economic Coordination Council (1998-1999), president, Southeast Asian Science Foundation (1993-1995), adviser to the president, Philippine Commercial International Bank (19851986), adviser to the Asean Trade Union Congress (1983-1985), Executive Director, Center for Research and Communication (1967-1981), director, Institute of Industrial Economics (1981-1984), Assistant to the president, Bank of Asia (1966-1968), Assistant to the director general, Program Implementation Agency, Office of the President of the Philippines and director, Operational Planning and Statistics, Program Implementation Agency Office of the President of the Republic of the Philippines (1965-1966).
His outstanding performance accorded him special awards such as: Distinguished Person of the Year Award of the Association of Development Financing Institutions in Asia and the Pacific for 2003, Laureate Award of the International Corporate Governance Network, 2002, Philippine Legion of Honor, Rank of Commander which was given by the President of the Philippines, Corazon C. Aquino, 1992, Honorary degrees, honoris causa from Angeles University, Xavier University and Manila Central University.
Estanislao, the humble son of a dentist, Januario Cañete Estanislao and Maria Loreto Pilapil Estanislao, is also a prolific writer. He has written about 20 books the latest of which is titled Responsible Citizenship III, Empowering Individuals and Strengthening Communities, 2003. Asean Economics in Perspective is the title of the latest of the 23 pamphlets that he has written.
Furthermore, he writes and maintains a column for the Manila Bulletin, Swimming Against the Current.
These and many other services he has been rendering have truly made him an exemplary citizen of the country. (ASJ)
