Boat owners have until today to register for fluvial parade
By Garry Cabotaje

BOAT owners who want to join this Saturday’s annual fluvial parade in honor of the Señor Sto. Niño will only have until today to register.

Cebu Coast Guard (CG) Chief Elson Hermogino said he had to extend the deadline after he noted that only 37 vessels, most of them motorboats, have registered for the fluvial procession.

Yesterday was supposed to be the registration’s last day.

“We can still accommodate them (the late registrants) and assign them their designated places for the fluvial formation,” said Hermogino.

Unregistered motorboats, he said, will be placed at the end of the fluvial to maintain smooth flow.

Participating vessels, most of them below 250 gross tons, will have their respective color markers as part of the fluvial parade’s contingency measures.

Hermogino earlier urged boat owners to register their watercraft early and bring copies of their vessels’ documents such as the Marina registration, the certificate of inspection and licenses of boat captain and crew.

Also today, Hermogino will preside over a meeting with boat owners to brief them about the formation of their vessels during the two-hour fluvial parade.

He said the CG will strictly impose the passenger capacity of participating boats and prevent participants from blasting firecrackers while at sea.

As a tradition, the images of Sto. Niño and Our Lady of Guadalupe will be brought to the National Shrine of St. Joseph Parish in Mandaue City and stay there overnight, a day before the fluvial procession.

A designated “galleon,” a yacht owned by the Ouano clan, will bring the two icons back to Cebu City.
