Kusug may field Madarang for VM
By Linette C. Ramos

THE opposition party Kugi Uswag Sugbo (Kusug) will still have last-minute changes in their slate today, with former Cebu City attorney Ramiro Madarang Sr. possibly seeking the vice mayoralty post.

Kusug leader and former mayor Alvin Garcia said that members of the party will go to the Cebu City Commission on Elections (Comelec) office this afternoon, the last day for the substitution and withdrawal of candidacy.

He refused to say, though, who among their bets will be replaced.

“It is very possible that it will be Atty. Madarang, that is why I will not confirm or deny it. He is asking to be given until today to decide,” Garcia told Sun.Star.

All 61 aspiring Cebu City officials who filed their poll papers have until midnight to withdraw their candidacy or register their substitute candidates.

In a separate interview, Madarang said he will undergo a drug test early today, “just in case I decide to file my certificate of candidacy.”

He also refused to confirm that he will replace businessman-engineer Norberto Homecillo, who is running for vice mayor under the Kusug ticket, but said that he will go with Kusug candidates to the Comelec office this afternoon.

Homecillo earlier said that he is willing to make way for Madarang if he decides to run for vice mayor.

Madarang said his doctors already told him that he is physically fit to run for public office and that “I can work like a carabao if I want to.”

“But should I decide to run, it will purely be because of public service. There is no other consideration that is more important than public service. No amount of health problems can be more superior than public service,” he said.

Garcia said that his son, Raymond, who is running for councilor in the north district, may also be one of their candidates who will withdraw.
