Lapu cops nab ‘killer’ of Briton
By Oscar C. Pineda

POLICE has captured the suspect in the killing of British national Peter W. Finnie, 66, in Barangay Canjulao, Lapu-Lapu City last Tuesday morning.

Homicide Section Chief Geoffrey Baguio filed yesterday a homicide case against Jerry Ymbong, alias Momoy.

Ymbong’s sister, Josephine Ymbong-Geraldizo, testified that she saw her brother beating Finnie before his death.

Finnie was from Otto Terrace, Sunderland, England. He had lived in the Philippines for 20 years. He had a common-law Filipina wife but eventually left her for another woman companion.

While conducting hot pursuit of the suspect at midnight Tuesday, SPO2 Raul Bacayo and SPO1 Mike Pasadole responded to a trouble alarm in Canjulao.

They eventually arrested the troublemaker and were surprised to learn that it was Ymbong.

Baguio said Ymbong, who is now detained, was alone when he allegedly committed the crime.

In the complaint filed against the suspect, Geraldizo, 40, stated that around 10 a.m., she saw the suspect strike the victim with an iron pipe three times in the hips.

Finnie then asked her to call the police but seeing Finnie’s companion, Myrna Perez, coming to help him, the witness left the two as they walked toward his rented apartment.

Finnie then collapsed and later died.

Perez, in an interview, said she heard the victim and the suspect arguing earlier that day.

The victim accused Ymbong of taking his missing radio and cash.

NBI medico-legal officer Gil Macato, in his issued death certificate, stated that Finnie died of heart failure secondary to serious injuries. Baguio said the injuries inflicted on the victim caused his death, making Ymbong liable of homicide.
