No bidding for P110-M lamps

THE Cebu City Government will spend at least P110.6 million to buy 20,000 “more durable and effective” sodium lamps for the streets in the city.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña said they are already ordering the first 10,000 lights while the other 10,000 will be ordered after the first batch has been paid.

The 10,000 sodium lights will cost City Hall at least $1 million or P55.35 million.

Each lamp costs at least $100, but it is lower in wattage and will allow the City
Government to save on electricity consumption, the mayor said.

The lamps have a guaranteed lifespan of 11 years.

“It is 15 to 20 percent higher in cost but the lifespan is double, if not triple, and that is the important thing. It is dimmer but it is more efficient and more durable,” Osmeña told reporters yesterday.

Savings

He said the City will be able to save on power bills by as much as P1.6 million a month, since the sodium lights have a wattage of only 70 watts.

Most of the lights being used in the city are 250 watts.

Osmeña said the City will buy the sodium lights directly from the Belgian company that exclusively distributes the items and will not go through the usual bidding process.

“If you bid, they will surely get the cheapest but it is not durable, so we will just transact directly with the exclusive distributor because we want something that will last,” the mayor added.

Target

He hopes to install all 10,000 lamps within one year.

Funds needed for the purchase of the lamps will be included in the next supplemental budget.

Once the sodium lights are delivered, the mayor will have all lamps in the streets in Cebu City changed, including those that are still working.

Old working lamps will be removed and will be used in the barangay halls.

“We will also not be responding to complaints of busted lamps. Everybody will just have to wait until we finish putting up the lamps and we will do it street by street to save on cost,” the mayor said.
