Vendor who ‘stole’ doc’s jewelry rapped By Giovannie A. Nilles Sun.Star Staff Reporter
THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) yesterday filed a complaint against a fish vendor for allegedly stealing P1 million worth of jewelry and cash from one of its employees.
Among the items stolen were diamond-studded rings and bracelets, imported branded wristwatches and several necklaces. Half of these items, though, were sold for only P70,000.
According to the complaint, suspect Michael Rico Portes pulled the heist last Sept. 1 in the house of Dr. Fernando Baron, an NBI employee, after his partner, a certain Joemil Go, identified Baron’s house as a target.
Go lived just a few meters from Baron’s house along Gil Tudtud St., Barangay Mabolo, Cebu City.
Portes, who admitted robbing the doctor, said in his affidavit that it was Go who persuaded him to rob the doctor.
He said it was only after three hours that the house he was supposed to rob was identified by Go.
He easily entered the house through an open window.
“I proceeded to a room. The door was open and when I entered, I noticed an old woman sleeping. As I looked around for anything of value, the old woman suddenly changed position. Afraid that she might be awakened by my presence, I went after getting a black luggage bag,” his admission read.
He said there were six wristwatches, nine diamond-studded rings, two bracelets, three necklaces and P10,000 cash.
Portes revealed that he took half of the loot. The other half went to Go.
