Young turks dominate By Glenn C. Michelena
THE dominating run of the young guns in the Class B division of the Rose Pharmacy Monthly Chess Tournament was punctuated with an exclamation mark after 21-year-old Richard Natividad captured the division’s championship Sunday at the Deep Blue D’Woodpusher’s Café, SM City-Cebu.
The two-day tournament, which saw an onslaught of impressive performances by young chess players in the likes of 15-year-old Kim Steven Yap, 14-year old Jimson Bitoon, 22-year old Mark Mangubat, among others, ended with the youthful Natividad snaring the crown by finishing the competition with six points after seven rounds.
Entering the seventh round with 5.5 points and needing just a draw for the title, Natividad secured his hold of the lead by settling for a draw with Michael Pinar in the final round.
Natividad’s 26.0 cumulative tiebreak points bested the 25.5 points of fellow six-point notchers Yap and Mangubat.
The first runner-up trophy went to Yap, who won the honors via tiebreak over Manny Mangubat, who settled for the second runner-up spot.
Yap and the 23-year old Mangubat had to resort to the tiebreaker after they won over Louie Canieso and Harold Diano in the final round.
Despite his failure to land a spot in the top 10, Bitoon, who tallied five points in the competitions, took home a prize by winning the Best Scorer-High School award, one of two special awards given out after the competitions. The other one – the Best Scorer-Women’s – was won by Therese Gonzales, who registered five points after seven rounds.
Carlito Santos copped the third runner-up spot likewise via his better cumulative tiebreak score over fellow 5.5-point notchers Pinar, Bonn Tibod and Brian Diagbil.
Pinar landed fourth runner-up, Tibod corralled the fifth runner-up honors after posting a win over Alexander Banyuhay, while Diagbil finished sixth runner-up after drawing with Santos in the final round.
Gesan Sarupan, Caniego and former Class B champion Bonjoe Lanorias round out the tournament’s top 10.
