Fewer entries, still a visual treat By Linette C. Ramos Sun.Star Staff Reporter
NO CELEBRITIES will be dancing in this Sunday’s grand parade, but Sinulog spectators can still look forward to seeing contingents that won several times in previous parades.
Sinulog-based category defending champion Tribu Sinanduloy of Tangub City and free interpretation defending champion Tribu Kandaya from Daanban-tayan, Cebu are contingents to watch for this Sunday.
Tribu Sinanduloy has won for four consecutive years already, getting two grand prize awards for both categories.
A total of 50 contingents registered to join the parade, 11 of which are from other provinces.
“The contingents from out-of-town are the groups to watch out for this year.
Several of them have won many times in the past. Some of them we have seen last year and they were very good,” Sinulog 2004 executive director Ricky Ballesteros said.
If Tribu Sinanduloy bags the grand prize award this Sunday, they will be a grand slam champion, which is awarded to the contingent that wins three consecutive times in one category.
Aside from the contingents, there are also 24 entries for the float competition, 23 entries for the higante and 22 for the puppet competition.
Fewer entries registered this year compared with last year, with a total of 127 registering for the Sinulog 2003 dance, float, higante and puppet competition.
Ballesteros reiterated yesterday that guest performers who did not register will not be allowed to dance in the parade route and on the stage at the Cebu City Sports Center.
Marshals will be detailed along the parade route to monitor contingents and to look out for unregistered groups that might join the parade.
Two communicators will also be assigned to every contingent to mo-nitor their dance movements, the number of participants and whether they are complying with the guidelines set by the Sinulog Foundation Inc.
A total of 17 judges from Manila will pick the winners in the Sonulog 2004 competition.
