Micame: DPWH officials still asleep?
By Rel P. Micame

REACTION. I received a text message the other day from a reader which said: “Wa na gyud ka’y laing topic? Ka sum-ol sab!” (Don’t you have another topic? How distasteful!)

Since I wanted some specifics, I asked, ”What do you mean? Who is this?”
He replied, “Ka Binisaya ato, wa ka kasabot? Never mind asking who I am.”

Since he did not identify himself, I suspect he was an official or employee of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). To a DPWH official, my column was revolting to one’s conscience. But to parents of students, the students themselves, businessmen, workers and motorists who are often late for their classes, appointments, jobs, offices, and their destinations, my topic which was about the heavy traffic at the Conso-lacion-Liloan highway was a welcome treat to them. They were all hopeful that through this column, highways officials would be jolted to action.

STILL ASLEEP? Apparently, however, highways officials are still in their deep slumber. They have not awaken to heed the suggestions of many Consolacionanons, both here and abroad, businessmen and motorists to do something about the traffic jam.

MY EXPERIENCE. I experienced the bad traffic myself when my business
partner and I inspected a lot in Barangay Tayud, Liloan, yesterday afternoon. I was stalled for over an hour at the highway from Cansaga to Bag-ong Dalan, Liloan. And, the texter had the nerve to call my topic sum-ol. Dili ni sum-ol niadtong mga tawong biktima sa heavy traffic. I had vowed to give space in this column complaints from any motorist, Like yesterday morning, when Paul Au-man of Sitio, Bakante, Barangay Tayud, Liloan, called up this corner to complain about the daily traffic at the highway.

Although Auman’s trip was not really delayed because he was driving his motorcycle, he just wanted to point out one of the causes of the congestion— the traffic enforcers themselves who stop north-bound and south-bound buses and jeepneys at the Bag-ong Dalan intersection to allow passage of vehicles coming from the secondary road. .

GIVE CHANCE. The confirmation of the appointment of Marilou Herrera as Consolacion municipal assessor went through a rigid scrutiny of the members of the Municipal Council. The objection of some town legislators to Herrera’s appointment was because of her lack of experience in real estate tax assessments. Herrera hurdled all other criteria. She is a college graduate and a native of Consolacion.

As a practising realtor for many years, I am more inclined to give the new lady municipal assessor a chance to prove her worth. Realty tax assessments can be learned faster while performing the job. She should not hesitate to consult the more experienced members of her staff like Artemio Valle and Mrs. Maria Perez Alenton although they are still undergraduates. I will also encourage her to refer to the Provincial Assessor Anthony Suzusco whatever problems she might encounter in her job. She should attend any real estate tax assessment seminar that may come in the future.

PAUL HARRIS FELLOWS. I wish to congratulate Rotarian past president Minerva “Mine” Abay-abay, Rotary Year (RY) 2002-03, as the latest addition to the Roll of Paul Harris Fellows (PHF) of the Rotary Club of Consolacion. To qualify for PHF, a Rotarian must have contributed, at least, $1,000 to the Rotary International Foundation for its various humanitarian projects world-wide, among them, the Polio Plus.

The first PHF of the Rotary Club of Consolacion was past president Aurelio Micame, RY l992-93. He was followed by past president Leonardo ”Ding’ Abay-abay, RY l998-99; past president Melvin “Beboy” Acenas, RY 2001-02.

The Rotary Club of Consolacion was presented its charter by Rotary International on February 14, l990.

SCRIPTURE READING. Suggested reading of the Holy Bible for today is found in the Gospel according to St. Mark 2:1-12 “Jesus heals a paralyzed man,” and for Jan. 17—St. Mark 2:13-17 “Jesus calls Levi.”
