Ildefonso signs P14M SMB deal By Jade S. Violeta
AFTER celebrating the return of forward Danny Seigle from injury, the San Miguel Beermen made sure their starting five remains as potent as ever after signing up Danny Ildefonso for another three and a-half years.
With the new contract, the power-playing Ildefonso, a former National University Bulldog superstar, will receive a monthly salary of P350,000 or a total of P14.7 million until June 2007.
But another Beerman, Boybits Victoria, is being advised by San Miguel coach Jong Uichico to search for another squad as his playing time will surely be cut following the acquisition of Cebuano playmaker Dale Singson from Shell in exchange for the Beermen’s seventh pick in the recent PBA draft.
“We’re willing to give him another contract but his playing time will surely get a significant cut. That’s why I’ve given him the freedom to look for another team,” Uichico said, adding that he’s certain a team will be interested in the 11-year veteran.
“I’m sure a team will need his services. He’s a veteran.”
On Joey Mente, there will be no problem as the former MBA stalwart isn’t a natural point guard but a two guard, according to Uichico.
In another development, PBA commissioner Noli Eala again aired his wish to add another team to the PBA following the emergence of a bloated list of free agents after the recent draft.
Amog the rookies on the free-agent list are Arnold Booker, Jam Alfad, Lou Gatumbato, Jay-Arr Estrada, Tristan Codamon, Francis Arabit, Julius Binuya, Alwyn Flores, Joel Lagare, Nicholas Fasano, Arvin Garcia, Steve Marucot and Jessie Lumantas.
Eala said the answer to the problem is to add teams to the league’s current 10-team roster.
