Int’l. star’s fall guy to train local wushu buffs By Christian Ben Rodriguez
INSPIRED by the country’s successful stint in wushu in last month’s Southeast Asian Games, the Federation of Parents-Teachers Association of Cebu Catholic Schools (FPTACCS) initiated a program to introduce, train and develop children for the internationally played Chinese martial art.
“Taking home a large part of our medal haul in wushu in the Vietnam Seag made the federation realize the country’s potential in the sport,” said FPTACCS president Marissa Puche.
Puche also said the program is highly credible as Chinese international wushu practitioner, Li Bing Lei, conducted the first one-week training here.
Bing Lei has previously won international titles in wushu and was even action star Jet Li’s stunt double in the movie “Hero.”
The program had its soft launching early this month at the Cebu Normal University where grade five students and physical education majors of the school were the first students.
Puche added that teaching wushu as a sport is aimed at developing Cebuano future gold medalists since Manila athletes compose the bulk of the Philippine national team.
With the centralized training in Manila, other regions find it difficult to send their athletes for training. The school-based local program, on the other hand, will give the Cebuanos an opportunity to engage in the sport.
