Bayantel sees double-digit growth in local corporate data business
By Jessica B. Natad

THE telecommunications arm of the Lopez group of companies is expecting double-digit growth in its corporate data business in Cebu this year.

This, after it invested some P60 million last year to upgrade its network in Cebu and other metropolitan cities in the Visayas and Mindanao.

The network upgrade, which covers broadband data access and expansion of data and Internet protocol (IP) core, was completed last month, said Mauro Santos, Bayan Telecommunications (Bayantel) head for the provincial markets, told a press conference at Laguna Garden Café over the weekend.

“We know Cebu is the next big thing as far as data services is concerned.

This is why we have upgraded our infrastructure not only in Cebu but other metro cities in the Visayas and Mindanao like Davao and Iloilo so we can deliver the best-in-class, reliable data services that Bayantel is noted for among the corporate and SME (small and medium enterprises) markets in Metro Manila,” he said.

Santos said some of the areas that will benefit from Bayantel’s upgrade are Mabolo, Mandaue, Metro Cebu, Banilad and Mactan Economic Zones 1 and 2.

He said the telecommunications company will also roll out IP-based services like voice over IP to cater to the information and communications technology (ICT)-related businesses in Cebu such as call centers and business processing outsourcing companies.

Santos said Bayantel is now in talks to partner with call centers in Cebu. Bayantel is servicing most of the call centers in Metro Manila.

For its DSL (digital subscriber line) service, he said Bayantel is now strengthening its hold on the SME market by introducing promotions for its DSL and Sky Internet products Starting this month, DSL is being offered at 50 percent less than the monthly recurring rates for two months. Its residential Internet arm, Sky Internet, also offers 50 percent off on the initial monthly service fee and free installation for a minimum one-year subscription.
