Minglanilla loses equipment fleet due to politics
By Ramon Jaluag

THE assignment of the first district engineering task force became the latest casualty in the rivalry between former political allies Minglanilla Mayor Marlowe Cañada and Vice Mayor Eduardo Selma.

Because Cañada is no longer with the Alayon party of Rep. Jose “Dodong” Gullas, the fleet of heavy equipment that had been based in Minglanilla, Cebu for a long time had to be moved elsewhere.

Talisay City Mayor Eduardo “Eddiegul” Gullas, Dodong’s brother and predecessor, who acquired the equipment during his incumbency as district representative, said the fleet had to be transferred as a consequence of Cañada’s defection from the Alayon camp.

Eddiegul said Dodong has decided to assign the task force in Talisay City, which is in dire need of the heavy equipment.

Eddiegul is running for congressman in place of Dodong, who is returning to his job as full-time administrator of the University of the Visayas.

With the assignment of the engineering task force to Talisay, Eddiegul said, the funds earmarked for the purchase of heavy equipment by the City this year can be saved.

Reelection

Cañada is running for reelection under the banner of Masa, the independent group of gubernatorial aspirant Celestino “Junie” Martinez Jr. and his runningmate Gregorio Sanchez.

The Gullases picked Cañada, then a town councilor on his third and last term in 2001, to be Alayon’s mayoral candidate.

Selma, Eddiegul’s brother-in-law, was then barred by law to seek reelection after having served as mayor for three consecutive terms and, instead, ran for vice mayor.

Not long after Cañada and Selma assumed their posts, the two quarreled over the way the southern town’s affairs were run.

The Gullas brothers tried to make Cañada and Selma reconcile but to no avail.
