Oyson: Sports Hall of Fame nominees known today By anuel N. Oyson Jr. Counter punch
THE members off the screening committee of the Cebu Sports Hall of Fame will meet this morning at the office of Councilor Sylvan Jakosalem to select the final batch of nominees for this year. They will be joined by Jakosalem, who also chairs the committee on youth and sports as well as the executive committee of the CSHF. We will be joined by Allan Torrevillas, executive director of the Youth and Sports Development Commission.
The committee made a preliminary listing of prospective nominees last week. A number of those being considered for installation are sports legends. They will be made known today so that they can be included in the 15th enshrinement ceremonies on or before the Cebu City Charter Day on Feb. 24.
FIRST. The Cebu Sports Hall of Fame is the first of its kind in the country. It is under the office of the Cebu City mayor. Manila does not have one, except the National Basketball Hall of Fame.
There is no Philippine Sports Hall of Fame even. The Philippine Olympic Committee has not set up one. Neither has the Philippine Sports Commission. The province of Bohol has its own, which patterned its concept from that of Cebu’s.
The CSHF, which I chair, came into existence by tolerance and acquiescence in 1990. It is a special project of the Cebu City Government, which spends for the plaques and accompanying awards dinners. But to this day, there is no ordinance or resolution or even an executive order creating the same. The members, including Nimrod Quiñones of The Freeman and secretariat, serve without any honorarium.
ORDINANCE. I suggested this before and I say it again: The Sangguniang Panlungsod or the City Mayor should recognize its existence officially to correct this flaw and give the CSHF a semblance of authority and legitimacy to do its thankless job. Is that too much? The original members of the CSHF were the late Orlando C. Sanchez and Wilfredo “Boy” Veloso of Sun.Star Cebu.
When he was PSC chairman years back, Mel Lopez Jr. told this corner that the PSC was planning to put up a National Sports Hall of Fame, where Filipino sports heroes can be properly enshrined. It would have been a pantheon of heroes of the past and the present. The projected cost at the time would have been P10 million. The plan was dropped after Lopez was replaced by Philip E. Juico.
E-MAIL. The brouhaha over the coming P1.5 million chess duel between GM Eugene Torre and IM Mark Paragua drew a feedback from a chess fancier and patron, Dr. Darcy Tabotabo. In an e-mail dated Jan. 18, from Middlesboro, Kentucky, Darcy said he talked to Torre some days ago and told the former that he also experienced the same case in a tournament he sponsored in Cebu.
He banned two players from competing. These players in turn complained to Edgar de Castro, then secretary-general of the PCF. De Castro told Darcy that being the sponsor he had the right to invite those he wanted and to ban anyone from his tournament. To me, GMs Joey Antonio and Bong Villamayor should grow up and not snarl over a dog’s bone since they were not invited. Darcy will be in Cebu on Valentine’s Day.
