Top-seeds win in rd. 1
By Glenn C. Michelena

WHILE the big names of the tournament immediately threw their weights around in the Coleto Itaas Chess Tournament, it was a pair of monumental upsets that proved to be the biggest news in the first round of the competition.

The seven-round Swiss system tournament at the Bibo Chess Club saw top-seed NM Elwin Retanal, No.2 seed Mike Banibane, and fourth-seeded Carlos Moreno live up to their stellar billings by vanquishing their respective first-round foes, while brothers Randy and Rey Ranile both lost to lower seeds – the same fate as No.5 seed Antonio Cabibil.

Playing black, NM Elwin Retanal defeated Jun Sanchez, No. 2 seed Mike Banibane bested Nick Cuizon, and Carlos Moreno defeated Alleri Somosot to all share the top spot along with 12 other players who registered wins in the opening round.

Both employing the black pieces, the Ranile brothers fell unexpectedly – the third-seeded Randy lost to Joel Pacuribot, while fifth-seeded Rey succumbed to youngster Jimson Bitoon.

Cabibil, on the other hand, lost to Redentor Nailon.

Other players who posted wins in the first round were: Romel Asoque, who won over Luis Miñoza; Joyce Lagrosas over Dominador Duaban; Jess Bitoon over Nonito Viteño; Eden Diano over Dennis Nagitao; Kim Yap over Teolito Carbonel; Mark Mangubat over Ernesto Esman; Franklin Najaro over Bob Tojong; Randolph Borces over Ricky Arco; and Edwin Arabat over Ritchie Evardo.
