Shangri-La Mactan awarded environmental tourism prize

Shangri-La’s Mactan Island Resort was the recipient of the Environmental Tourism award in the Kalakbay Award held at the Philippine International Convention Center recently.

Chosen by a panel composed of key players in the tourism industry, the hotel bested some of the most prestigious hotels in the Philippines based on criteria that included innovation, impact, commitment and cooperation and sustainability.

Commenting on the award, general manager Desmond Hatton said: “We are truly honored to have won this acclaimed award. There is no better recognition of our product, staff and services than from the key players in the Philippine tourism industry. We not only care for our guests but we care for the environment as well.”

Earlier in the year, the hotel was also named one of the Top 10 Best Resorts in the Asia-Pacific by Business Traveller Magazine, sharing the limelight with some of the region’s most popular and exclusive resorts. It also received the “Five Star Diamond Award” given by the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences for exemplary products and services and the coveted Favorite Resort in Asia from the readers of Time Magazine. In 2001, the resort won the “Hotel of the Year” award from Kalakbay.

The 547-room Shangri-La’s Mactan Island Resort, located in Lapu-Lapu city in Cebu’s Mactan Island, is the Philippines’ first deluxe resort. It is the first resort in the country to be awarded an ISO 14001 certification for its commitment to set international environmental standards as well as for its involvement in various environmental initiatives.
