Cebuanas vie for RP spots
By Patrick C. Costelo

FOUR of the best Cebuana woodpushers are currently revving up for slots in the RP chess team, which will see action in the world chess Olympiad.

Rose Pharmacy Women’s Chess Tournament winner Melody Carcia and runners-up Jenny Palomo, Therese Gonzales and Sofia Balite two other lady chessers have been undergoing training sessions with International Master Rico Mascariñas at the Bibo Diners for a week now.

Backed by Rose Pharmacy’s Bogie Lim, training started briefly after the two-day competition last Jan. 24-25, which served as a regional qualifying round.

According to chess arbiter Linky Yap, the four are gearing up for the National Women’s Open, which starts April 11 in Manila.

Garcia is a former University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) varsity who now works for the Red Cross; Palomo is the top lady player of the USJ-R high school team; Gonzales likewise is a top-board player of Abellana National School, while Balite is from the Cebu Normal University. They will take on the rest of the regional qualifiers for the top three spots.

However, Macariñas, who is teaching in a chess school in Singapore, will go back to Singapore in about a week. But Yap’s group will ensure the training continues.

Last month’s Rose Pharmacy Women’s event saw Garcia the other three players by a mere half point to win the title.
