Kiddie Olympics in Cebu By Christian Ben Rodriguez
IF GIVEN the chance, Cebu City can host the International Children’s Olympics, says Cebu City Sports Commission Chairman Jonathan Guardo.
“We have the capability and we have the manpower to do such a feat,” Guardo said during a courtesy call on Vice Mayor Mike Rama yesterday. “This will be a good exposure for all of us that the international community may know we can host an event of great magnitude.”
Guardo accompanied the Cebu delegation to this year’s competitions in Cleveland, USA to the Vice Mayors office. The group was also joined by Cleveland Filipino-American community leaders.
The city sports chief added that the City is a conducive venue for such a big event since most of the facilities needed from hotels to sporting venues are already available in Cebu.
Guardo also said that if Cebu will host the event, it will be a big boost to the economy and morale of Cebu City since more than 150 cities from an expected 50 countries gather for the affair every year.
He said they will first see how the Cebu City delegates fare in the games this July in Cleveland, Ohio. The Cebu City delegates will be taken cared for by the Filipino-American community in Cleveland headed by Teresita Okihara along with Vivian Remotigue, Olivia Remotigue and Joaquin Remotigue. The four Fil-Am community leaders are in Cebu to meet the athletes.
According to Okihara, who is spearheading a fund-raising campaign for the 32-strong Cebu delegation, Taiwan was the first Asian city to host the games in 1994.
She added that the first Asian country to join the competitions was Korea, which is now sending two delegations every year. Next year the games will be held in London.
