Ms. Bumgarner hailed in Golden Wheel Awards
THREE of the country’s top motorsports achievers – Pepon Marave, Glenn Aguilar and Michelle Bumgarner – were feted with the highest honors yesterday in the first ever Golden Wheel Awards at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium of the RCBC Tower in Makati City.
Marave and Aguilar were named co-Drivers of the Year in the said event, while Bumgarner emerged the unanimous choice as the Female Driver of the Year.
Both Marave and Aguilar got five votes each from the Executive Screening Committee headed by Batangas Racing Circuit chairman Johnny Tan for their valuable contributions for the country in international competitions.
Marave was the first true-blooded Filipino to capture the Asian Formula 3 crown while Aguilar emerged the first Filipino to ever capture the FIM Asian Motocross title.
The Golden Wheel Awards Committee was equally proud that the country has produced its first female international champion in Bumgarner who copped the Asian Zone Karting plum last December.
She was the most bemedalled racer in the show directed by Ike Gangoso. Aside from the Female Driver of the Year, she also received the Karter of the Year award, the Open class champion trophy and the Golden Wheel trophy for karting.
The other Golden Wheel awardees were Jaime Barcial (Scooter), JP Carino (Formula Toyota), Audel Sison (Drag Race), Jolet Jao (Superbikes), Robert Abas (4x4 Off-Road Racing), Carlos Anton (National Touring Car Championship), Ivan Isada and co-driver Art Guevarra (Rally), Daryl Flores (Slalom), Alex Perez (Rally Cross) and Tyson Sy (Formula BMW).
Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP) president Mandy Eduque lauded the creation of the first Golden Wheel Awards.
