Two cage, two v-ball coaches, to join Hall of Fame By Glenn C. Michelena
IN A fitting tribute to their immense contribution to Cebu sports, four local legends: a male volleyball coaching great, two collegiate basketball coaching icons, and a female volleyball coaching legend, make up this year’s blockbuster cast of the 2004 Cebu Sports Hall of Fame on Feb. 20.
The Cebu Hall of Fame Academy, CSHF’s selection body, recently named USC volleyball coach Eugene dela Cerna, USJ-R basketball coach Manuel Baring, former USC basketball mentor Juan “Dodong” Aquino and ex-SWU volleyball coach Thelma Paras-Datig, as its 2004 Hall of Fame inductees and will honor the legends during the 15th Cebu Sports Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony at Cebu Grand Hotel on Feb. 20.
Dela Cerna, 59, a multi-sport standout during his days as an athlete, was a phenomenal winner who hoarded local volleyball championships at all levels: Divisional, regional, national, high school, collegiate, Boys, Men’s, Women’s divisions, as a volleyball coach for USC and Central Visayas squads.
In 1969, dela Cerna initiated the formation of the Cebu Catholic Schools Athletic Association, and is the current executive director of the Cebu Volleyball Association.
