Rival frats tangle anew By Minerva B. Gerodias/Mia E. Abellana
RIVAL fraternities Alpha Kappa Rho (Akrho) and Tau Gamma Phi are at it again.
Two Tau Gamma members and a friend were wounded after an alleged Akrho member shot them while they were drinking in Labangon, Cebu City yesterday dawn.
An Akrho member, in turn, was wounded when a suspected Tau Gamma member shot him in front of the Carmen National High School in Barangay Cogon West, Carmen Thursday night.
In yesterday’s incident, Tau Gamma members Robert Pacaña, John-john Fuentes and Joselito Buyan were in a karaoke joint on Tres de Abril and A. Lopez Sts. when the unidentified attacker armed with a handgun suddenly appeared and opened fire.
Buyan was hit in the right thigh, Fuentes in the left side of his body and Pacaña in his back. The three were rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center.
The incident in Carmen, meanwhile, left Giovannie Bonjoc, 23, a high school dropout, wounded in the back after he was shot in a rumble.
A spot report submitted to the Cebu Provincial Police Office said Bonjoc tagged a Tau Gamma member as the culprit.
On probation
PO2 Pascual Mendoza said police did not receive reports of a rumble, but that investigators are looking into it.
Police have identified a possible suspect but are withholding his identity until the investigation is completed.
The suspect reportedly had an encounter with Bonjoc before the incident in Barangay Luyang, where a fiesta celebration was being held.
Police, however, did not hear of any trouble during the fiesta celebration.
Investigators are having a hard time because Bonjoc is not cooperative, Pascual said.
He said Bonjoc was previously detained for possession of drugs and was out of jail on probation prior to last Thursday’s incident.
Both shootings followed the incident last week, where a grenade was thrown at a group of Tau Gamma men drinking along C. Padilla St.
There have been clashes, too, between the two groups in Mandaue City.
Last month, a high-ranking Akrho official was shot dead allegedly by Tau Gamma men.
For the past months, the two groups have figured in several troubles that caused a number of deaths.
The police have exerted efforts, including arranging a peace summit, to reconcile the two groups. Still, the violence continues.
But top leaders of both groups remain optimistic that they will attain peace soon.
