Costanilla: ‘Lapu-Lapu’ settles in Luneta By Sam Costanilla Spotlight
STATUE. We Cebuanos are happy that the 30-foot bronze statue of Lapu-Lapu has finally been unveiled at Rizal Park in Manila despite the strong objection from the National Historical Institute (NHI). To me, the NHI objection is uncalled for and should be withdrawn at once. Why, is there a law banning the construction of the statue of the very first Cebuano war hero at Luneta? As a matter of fact, the erection of the Lapu-Lapu statue there is a long overdue thing. The trouble with NHI, which is, by the way, dominated by Tagalog officials, is that it cannot accept the fact that Lapu-Lapu, a Cebuano, is actually the country’s first hero. Former Tourism Secretary Richard Gordon was right in stating that Lapu-Lapu is a symbol of a leader who fought against those foreign invaders who trampled on the rights of the Filipinos. By the way, I would have attended the unveiling of the statue last week if not for a prior commitment. My good friend Rudynah Entera informed me that the local office of the Tourism Department is willing to provide me a two-way plane ticket if I was ready to witness the event. She called me up the night before the flight the next morning. My goodness, why the very short notice? I jokingly told her that the tourism department wasn’t serious at all in inviting the media to the unveiling in Manila. The invitation should have been made days earlier so that prior and future commitments could be scheduled for other days.

CONCERTS. This Friday, Feb. 13, two major concerts are simultaneously taking place in town – and both are confusing us which one to choose. At White Gold House, it’s “Retro Love” with John Ford Coley while at Waterfront Hotel in Lahug, it’s “Abba – The Music” with the Swedish quartet Abba. For those who dig for purely love songs, Coley’s show is the best choice. But for those who go for the danceable hits, Abba’s concert is the one to watch. Pick your choice, folks.

BAND. And talking of concerts, don’t ever miss “Rochelle Vega All Out” on Feb. 20 at SM City Cinema One. Matinee shows are at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. with a music education session after each show. The gala show starts at exactly 8 p.m. Aside from a 30-piece orchestra, to be conducted by Maestro Obet del Rosario as Rochelle’s accompaniment, the Asian Academy of Music Band will also perform in the show. The band is composed of music teachers from the academy who have already appeared in numerous social functions. Upcoming diva Jing Feji and Miss Saigon (London) star Chuck Marbella are Rochelle’s special guest performers. Tickets are still available at the academy’s Raintree Mall office. Let us support our very own local talents by watching this concert.

EX-DIPLOMAT. Is it true that this former diplomat is now in Europe to enjoy “same-sex marriage”? Is it also true that a local establishment where they used to work is closing down? Just asking. (For reactions/feedback, call or text 0916-3483333).
