Pedrosa captures chess title
By Patrick C. Costelo

RAMSY Pedrosa came up with a clutch win over Cefirino Vizco in the final round of the Rose Pharmacy Active Chess Tournament-Open Division to finish with six points and walk away with the title Sunday at Deep Blue ‘D Woodpushers Café at SM City-Cebu.

Four players finished with six wins apiece in the seven-round Swiss system competition including Erwin Ababat, Redentor Nailon and National Master Elwin Retanal but Pedrosa slipped away with the title after a logging 25 cumulative points in the tiebreak.

Pedrosa led by just a point over Ababat, who settled for the runner-up spot with 24 cumulative points.

Nailon, who leveled Glen Pardillo in round seven, and Retanal, who thrashed Carlos Moreno III, bagged the third and fourth spots after collecting 22.5 and 21 cumulative points, respectively.

Pedrosa and Vizco were in dire need of a win in the final round as they came out of round six with five points apiece along with six other players, while Moreno led the pack with 5.5 points.

But the endgame break went to Pedorsa, despite getting stuck in a four-way tie, after erstwhile leader Moreno lost his final match against Retanal.

Moreno, Lanorias, who routed Joyce Lagrosas, and Natividad, who defeated Arnold Cadiz in his last match, scored 5.5 points apiece to stay at the fifth to seventh spots, in that order.

Completing the top 10 were Vizco, Miguel Banibane and Eden Diano.
