CCCI seeks would-be mediators By Jessica B. Natad
THE Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) and Cebu Mediation Foundation Inc.’s (CMFI) business conflicts mediation project is searching for 30 professionals who will be trained to become professional mediators by the Singapore Mediation Center on March 18 and 19.
CCCI vice president for business development and management Clarito Fruelda urged business and industry groups to nominate representatives from their sectors to become their mediators, and help de-clog the courts of cases.
Aside from being experts in their own fields, mediators must be neutral and fair to live up to the integrity of mediation, one of the chamber’s new services to its members, he said during the general membership meeting of the Cebu Bankers Club (CBC) at Laguna Garden Café Tuesday.
“Mediation will always be cheaper and involves only a short period of time,” Fruelda said.
He said CCCI’s mediation service will ask for only about 10 percent of the P30,000 acceptance fees lawyers normally ask to defend business cases. The mediation fee will cover the maintenance of CCCI’s mediation office.
According to CMFI president and chief executive officer Bonifacio Belen, the project aims to give parties in conflict a win-win solution through the out-of-court procedure of mediation.
CBC president Jose Camello said several members of the organization had expressed interest to become mediators.
