Back bets who fight abortion and mercy killings
By Charmaine Y. Rodriguez

CEBU Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal blessed hundreds of sick people yesterday and warned them against two greater social ills: abortion and euthanasia.

In his homily during yesterday observance of the 12th World Day of the Sick, Vidal urged the faithful to support candidates who are against these two acts.

“Magbantay kita ug ayuhon nato og gamit atong gahum sa pagpili sa angay ug kinahanglan pili-on, paabuton pa (Let us be watchful and use our power carefully to choose only the deserving),” he said.

The prelate added that while House Bill 4110 or the Reproductive Health Care Act has been set aside, legislators are now bringing up another law favoring euthanasia.

“No one can claim the right to destroy or indiscriminately manipulate the life of the human being,” Vidal quoted Pope John Paul II as saying.

“Sanglit mga binuhat man kita sa Dios ug tinubos ni Cristo, mahalon gayod nato, ampingan gayod nato ang tagsatagsa nato ka kinabuhi, kansang tag-iya ang Dios ra.
Busa, wala gayoy tawo nga mangahas sa pagpatay sa gisabak pinaagig aborsyon o pagpatay sa masakiton ug sa himalatyon pinaagig euthanasia, sa ngalan kunohay sa kaluoy (Since we are God’s creation, and we’re saved by Christ, let us love and take good care of our life, which is owned by God. No one should dare to kill what is being conceived through abortion or kill the sick through euthanasia, in the name of mercy),” the prelate said.

Men and women were moved to tears as they waved their hands to the Holy Eucharist, which was carried by Vidal around the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral.

Msgr. Cristobal Garcia, who led the prayers and the singing after the mass, also asked those on wheelchairs to move nearer to the altar for the blessing.

Vidal reminded those who are sick that illnesses or even death should be accepted with humility and faith.

“That is what the Holy Father meant when he said, ‘To see in our sick brother and sister the face of Christ, who, by suffering, dying and rising, achieved the salvation of humankind,” Vidal added.
