Cebu taekwondo jin shines in US By Christian Ben Rodriguez
A YOUNG Cebuano taekwondo jin based in Sherman, Texas dominated his Hispanic-American opponent to wrest the prestigious Amateur Organization of Karate’s Invitational State Championship title in Abilene, Texas last December.
Vincent Torrefranca captured the sparring title after winning over stronger and heavier opponents, while also settling for a satisfactory fifth-place finish in the kata division against a field of 20 participants.
Torrefranca who is was born in Cebu City but raised in Texas, was qualified to compete in the Invitational State Championships since he ranked No.2 in sparring and No.4 in kata in the qualifying event.
The tournament invited only the top five martial artists from the North, South, Central and West regions of Texas. Vincent, son of Nicolas and Lourdes Rama Del Prado Torrefranca, is under the tutelage of Master Alinda Maxwell, a fifth-degree black belt in taekwondo.
In the final round, Torrefranca faced Raul Garces, a young Hispanic-American from the North Region. Vincent was not intimidated by his opponent as he pulled off the biggest upset of the state championships, bringing Garces to the ground as the head judge had to invoke the “Mercy Rule.”
Torrefranca is a consistent honor student of S and S Consolidated School.
